When Matthew was 3, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Micky and his wife, Peggy, did all they could to comfort their youngest son. Not long after, Make-A-Wish reached out to his family and granted Matthew’s wish to go to Disney World. The trip had a lasting impact on the entire family, especially Matthew’s older siblings, Megan and Michael. “The most valuable part of the experience went beyond the trip itself—it gave our family a week where we could be a normal family again,” Micky explained.
After experiencing the power of a wish, Micky immediately knew that he wanted to pay it forward. “Since then, my family and I have been all-in in every aspect,” Micky said. He has been volunteering with Make-A-Wish since 2009 and even served as the Chairman of the Board; but nothing is quite as fulfilling as being a wish granter, he maintains. “To be able to change a kid’s life like that—it’s beyond cool!”
Micky’s family is stronger than ever. Matthew, now 26 and happily married, has been cancer-free for over 15 years. He and his older siblings have followed in their dad’s footsteps—Michael has been the Community and Media Relations Manager at the Connecticut chapter for over five years, Megan volunteers at her local chapter, and Matthew serves as a high school campus minister while volunteering at his local Make-A-Wish chapter. Their mom, Peggy, joined her husband and kids as a wish granter herself and preceded Micky as a member of the board.
Now a teacher at La Salle high school, where he also serves as the campus minister, Micky has instilled in his students a similar desire to give back. “My students are involved now!,” he exclaimed. Last Christmas, 1200 students at his high school wrote letters to Santa for Macy’s Make-A-Wish Believe Campaign, a tradition that Micky and his students look forward to continuing.
“I’m just so blessed!,” Micky humbly upholds. “To be able to help in these ways, it’s just incredible.”
As Micky continues to touch the lives of countless kids and their families, he inspires so many others to do the same, including his loving family.
