Sing and dance for wishes!

Sing and dance for wishes
Fundraising can be daunting for those of you who are new to it. With this column we hope to give you ideas on how to raise money for the Walk for Wishes®, grow your team and have a great time!

Here’s your chance to get creative! For your next fundraiser, consider hosting a talent night at your local church, school, or restaurant. Organize your team and pick a date! Use your team for recruitment, stage crew, concessions and hosting.

By choosing a venue in the community like a restaurant or church, it will be easier to find and attract talent to the scene. It could also give you an automatic audience! These venues can advertise on websites, social media, verbal announcements, in bulletins, or in the venue itself. Most of them also have necessary equipment such as microphones, speakers, and a stage. Make your own flyers to give the venue and post around town in places such as dance studios, music schools, coffee shops, schools, or college campuses.

Once you have a venue, you need talent to put on the stage. Consider holding a screening audition to make sure the content is appropriate for your event. If the show involves a lot of music, make a master CD with all of the music in order to eliminate a delay in acts. When you put together the order of the acts, be sure to stagger the type of talent i.e. do not put all singers in a row. Remember to keep your performers updated with the schedule.

In addition, make sure your roster is something people would want to pay money to see. Your team will make money charging admission. Another way to make money with a talent show is an entrance fee for all talent. Try to have food items donated to sell at the event as well. If you know this show is going to be BIG, make up a program and ask local businesses if they would like to buy advertising space.

As always, ask to set up a table with information about Make-A-Wish Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley. Find your most outgoing and funny team member and have your Master of Ceremonies make frequent announcements about your efforts.

Talent or variety shows can be a big undertaking for some without the time and energy. A few alternatives could be hosting a karaoke night or a comedy show. You will still make money just with admissions with some savvy advertising!

Everyone is good at something, so encourage family, friends, and strangers to reveal their hidden talents for a good cause. Your talent show fundraiser could mean the discovery of “the next big thing!”
